Palberta had the honour of supporting the almighty Bikini Kill when they played in New York for the first time in twenty-two years, back in a period that feels like decades ago – May 2019. When going to gigs was allowed, remember? Needless to say, it must have been thrilling for Nina Ryser, Anina Ivry-Block and Lily Konigsberg to open for the riot grrrl outfit in their own backyard. A US tour followed, but little did they realise that the subsequent UK/European expedition would be cancelled for reasons we no longer have to explain.
Something In The Way is the band’s latest single and opens straight into beautiful harmonies and edgy riffs. There is a rawness to the guitars and drums, but it’s intertwined with ethereal vocals – a pretty unusual combination but with a striking impact. It demands your attention as it’s two things you’re used to hearing paired together; an innovative and fascinating move for sure.
As Something In The Way progresses, it blends into a tricked out and looped fragment of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. This is the first Palberta release put to track from a professional studio environment, having found a fantastic recording partnership with Matt Labozza (Palm, Shimmer). They wanted to experiment with the song structure in this newfound setting, and it’s produced a tune that’s wonderfully full of light and joy.
