Have you heard of a band called Stanleys, John? You haven’t?!?! Where the hell have you been? Oh yeah, in self-isolation. Sorry, my bad! Do you need any toilet roll or any other essentials? I can pop to the shop for you. No?! Good! You can’t get anything anyway; everyone’s stockpiling everything from nappies to chicken nuggets. Thankfully, I have something better for you, and it’s worth its weight in gold.
Remember that group I was telling you about before, John? You can’t! Seriously, are you ok? Anyway, they’ve just released a new single, Measured In Gold, and it’s a Britpop beauty dressed in North Face attire and holding a can of Stella. It’s quintessentially British, and I bloody love it. It isn’t a tune about going on a gap year to Railay or the feeling of owning a Lamborghini; it’s a working-class song full of passion and vigour.
From Tom Concannon’s smooth and irresistible vocals to Jake Dorsman’s intricate guitar riffs, Measured In Gold should, and probably will, be heralded as yet another hit. It’s up there with A Better Life and The Martyr as being thought-provoking and intriguing. Most musicians struggle to connect with their audience, Stanleys don’t. Much like Oasis, John Cooper Clarke and Idles, they are socially driven and insistent on changing the UK through music. I like it! Keep it up.
