Forward, the latest single by London-based singer-songwriter Sophie Jamieson, is an ethereal ride down a flowing river, filled with melancholic soundscapes that blend with heavenly vocals to create a truly memorable song. It’s an instant classic and one of the most potent and unique releases this year.
The track begins with some gorgeous piano that has an almost electronic tinge to it, which continues and variates throughout Forward. The vocals arrive very quickly and are easily the most appealing aspect of the song. Jamieson’s style is incredibly distinct, with a radiant and graceful sound that sets her apart from a lot of other musicians in this genre. Lyrically, the artist does a fantastic job creating imagery that fits the tone flawlessly. She sings about being “light as a feather” repeatedly, and it serves to create a genuinely sublime atmosphere.
Jamieson states that “Forward is about trying to find some control amid chaos. My instinct for years had been to deny that a period of time had happened, to empty myself of its trace – but at this point, I began to understand that I could accept it, that it is part of who I am and that I do not have to destroy the evidence of my past in order to move forward”. This track perfectly encapsulates the feeling of needing to move forward and progress through the chaos and turmoil that exists in life.
Taken from Jamieson’s upcoming EP, Release, out on 1st December, Forward is a must-listen. Give it a spin now!
