Every day, I chat with Independent Music News boss Daniel Thomas on WhatsApp about work and music. Sometimes, he gets so excited about a song, he sends it over purely to share the joy. This happened two weeks ago when he wrote about Fifa ’98 by Sombre. I was only three when the game was around, but I have countless fond memories of playing Fifa 2001 on my computer as a kid, and the track made me feel a weird kind of happy nostalgia. Needless to say, I was pleased when Daniel contacted me yet again, this time with Sombre’s brand new single, Nagasaki.
Nagasaki is an impressive tune from start to finish. The bass line is like a beating heart that gives life to the listener’s ears, while the soaring harmonies and guitar parts dance around in perfect synchronization, like an audio symphony of ultimate DIY sensibilities. The lyrics are masterful, and the deep vocals deliver them in an endearing and relatable way that many music fans will be delighted by.
When we become fond of a band like Sombre, we tend to be right about them. I can tell they’ve got so much more to come in the future, and I’m a massive fan of Nagasaki. So what are you still doing here? Go and check it out! You won’t regret it.
