When I saw the words Soccer Mommy appear on my screen, I thought it was just Google suggesting things I might enjoy based on my seedy browser history.
But I shouldn’t have; I was introduced to Soccer Mommy as an artist a while ago; when a song called Scorpio Rising peacefully entered my life through my car speakers via the magic of Spotify’s song suggestions. Yes, I am supporting the corporate giant that is Spotify, and yes I do feel like a sell-out, but where else can I organise my playlists so efficiently? That’s right, sit down.
But never mind all that, we’re talking about Soccer Mommy’s latest single; Circle The Drain. The title alone conjures up quite an anxiety-inducing image; someone being on the brink of something terrible, like the vultures circling or the moment you check your bank balance after a heavy night out. I really shouldn’t have offered to pay for that taxi home.
I sometimes wonder what fear is in the artist’s mind when I hear songs like this. What exactly is the worst-case scenario, the fall coming if you slip? For me, it’s waking up and realising you need the toilet and you forgot to buy more toilet roll in your big shop yesterday. I’m shuddering right now just thinking about it. But seriously, the lyricism on display in Circle The Drain does shine a spotlight on some very personal issues; addressing mental health with such an open and frank honesty that’s impossible not to admire.
Soccer Mommy has spoken of being influenced by the likes of Avril Lavigne, and it’s very evident on Circle The Drain. The track begins with a muffled rhythm, introducing an infectious riff then breaking into acoustic guitar, accompanied by soothing vocals that she brings every time. It’s catchy; one of those songs you can’t get out of your head, so you have to play it on loop for hours to slightly unglue it from your mind. In a good way too – not in that Justin Bieber, Yummy, type of way. Hate that tune. And if you like it, I hope you step in a very deep puddle and get your socks all wet.
Like I’ve said previously, maybe I’m a fan of Soccer Mommy. I was before, I will continue to be, and this single only gets me more excited for her upcoming album, Color Theory, out February 28th. Pre-order it here.
