Funky post-punk is definitely a genre, and the likes of Pottery, Working Men’s Club and Parquet Courts are at the forefront. Leeds art-rockers Mush are firmly planted in this rip-roaring camp too, and their new single, Dead Beat, sets off at top speed and never stops.
The scuzzy guitars mid-track had this reviewer dancing around the kitchen, and its abrupt end is spot on. The four-piece admit that this was an old song that didn’t fit on their debut album, 3D Routine. Dead Beat was written when vocalist and guitarist Daniel Hyndman was working in an office, and the lyric “Hey, what’s your extension?” had me laughing out loud.
The band are releasing a new EP on August 29th titled Great Artisanal, and I can’t wait to hear it. For now, I’m going to give 3D Routine a listen. With high praise from the likes of Uncut and Louder Than War plus heavy rotation on BBC Radio 6 Music, I am pretty disappointed in myself that I haven’t heard it already. Something I intend to rectify as soon as possible.
