After the release of their critically acclaimed debut, Dream Noise, in 2019, Capitol have returned with a new single titled Weathered.
The highly anticipated song is an affectionate nod towards their ’80s influences of Slowdive, The Cure, and Joy Division. Drawing inspiration from the loneliness and desire of companionship many are facing during COVID-19, Weathered is an open love letter to anyone feeling alone during the pandemic. With vocalist John Kemps using a monotone styling throughout the track, there is a slight hint of emptiness to his delivery that is only relived by the sweet additional vocals of ELIO. Adding an extra dimension to the song, it perfectly balances out the emotional context and creates an ambience to the lyrical delivery.
The melody is layered with indie beats that add a continuous rolling rhythm and motion to Weathered, combined with a barrage of guitars and synths that shimmer their way through the song. That wall of sound Capitol have created provides an almost silky tone to the music without taking away from the catchy melody.
Weathered is the perfect follow up to their debut, with Capitol carving out their own alluring, hypnotic sound and direction to the shoegaze genre.
