The tender tones of Do I Belong Here? is the latest taste for us to enjoy from Such Small Hands, ahead of a debut album set for release in September.
Such Small Hands is the alias of Melanie Howard, otherwise known as the bassist of The Wedding Present. Having released her debut EP back in 2016, and single Ghost last year, the artist set out her stall to broadcast gentle, quirky sounds that are a far cry from her work on bass duties.
This new track, Do I Belong Here?, finds her questioning herself in a melancholic exploration of self-doubt.
“This song is about a strained relationship with a relative”, she says. “We broke contact for a long time, and my feelings about them spiralled up and down. In the lyrics, I’m reflecting on how it felt to be in a room with someone who should know who you are inside and out, but seemed more like a total stranger”.
There’s plenty of folk quirk in this track, and it’s no surprise to learn that influences include Björk and Chelsea Wolfe.
We’re promised similar themes of heartbreak and reflection on the album, Carousel, which lands on Such Small Records on 18th September. I, for one, can’t wait to hear it.
