A brand new single from Gothenburg-based SKULDPADDA dropped today, and we couldn’t be more chuffed about it.
Their debut album, Little Islands, boasts more than a whopping hundred thousand streams to date following its release in May 2019. Good work! Almost a year on, Red Moon marks the first release from their second album, Commitment, which is due for our excited ears sometime in May 2020.
Red Moon kicks off with a retro, fun jangly guitar riff. I happened to listen to this in the car on my daily scurry home after a particularly woeful day, and it was the best medicine for those midweek blues.
“Don’t you worry about things. Things are only things. People are only people” I needed that.
Lyrically, Red Moon continues as sweet, joyful and romantic. Who doesn’t need a bit of that now and then? Especially when the world is in a virus crisis, and Freddo’s are about seven-pound.
The upcoming album, Commitment, has been described as a microscopic look at relationships. Red Moon kicks off this concept nicely by delving into the potential significance of one person and the beautiful rarity of finding someone special. “There’s you; you are the reddest moon”. Mutually soft and lovely male and female vocals contribute to the “romantic in a cool way” tone of the track.
Instrumentally, Red Moon is raw and uncomplicated. Its soft pop meets krautrock and retro meets the hear and now. And it’s catchy! This is a song you’ll want to hear over and over again. We love it.
SKULDPADDA have been expanding their reach across to us on the other side of the pond. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for gigs popping up here in the UK soon. Please! Thanks.
Like the song? Cool! Check out Rebecca Aston’s interview with Michaela Åberg and Johan Holm of SKULDPADDA next. It’s a good ‘un.
