Welcome to the Phantom Isle, where all your new wave needs will be fulfilled. Modern sensibilities are over-run with nostalgic power, and if this song was played wherever the Isle may be, you would instantly know you had arrived. The boys from London have recently put out new single, Mar V, and if you’ve got a box, they’ll most certainly be ticking it with this piece.
They immediately hit us with a bassline to die for, synth hooks for days, rapturous vocals, screaming guitar, and thumping drums that would slot right into any electro/house tune, locking it all together perfectly. With an intro ripped straight from a Simian Mobile Disco set, it’s time to go. Before long, the listener becomes hypnotized by the prowess of an ethereal voice before being thrown back into the pulse of a bassline that would move the most rigid of necks. This one’s a goer. We’re taken on a journey that rises and falls with build-ups and breakdowns to envy. Atmosphere, rhythm, darkness, meaning – it’s got it all.
You can feel the marks the likes of Soulwax and LCD Soundsystem have left on these guys, but what a combination they make, with genres blended to perfection. I always know a song is hitting the right spots when I simply HAVE to hear it live. While influences have been mentioned, comparing this record to other artists would be an injustice; Mar V is entirely its own thing. It’ll give you energy, lift your spirits, and drive you to wherever you need to go. Be excited! You’re going to want more.
