COVID-19 has done funny things to relationships. Some have broken up, others have retreated to their country homes in different parts of the world (not you Neil Gaiman, you just went home). But those who are strong enough to endure the endless cycle of criticism, and a barrage of “where’s the sauté pan?”, have found a way of getting through the lockdown by forming lo-fi pop bands. Mads Vadsager & Cathrine Van Leeuwen have managed to do just that.
In joining forces, the Copenhagen-based duo have created an act under the pseudonym Lil Cat that could possibly be a modern-day Sonny and Cher, amid the sea of bedroom pop that seems to be a popular trend amongst the new COVID generation.
With their debut single, I Look Hot In This Dress, already released in May, Lil Cat’s latest song, Red Blues, is a musical explosion with danceable vibes. The power couple have carefully crafted a deceptively simple pop track, complete with a funk bass line that sets the tone for a hooking melody and sweet, candy-like vocals. Following in the steps of the queen of country, Dolly Parton’s PMS Blues, the lyrics are a witty take on those times when premenstrual syndrome creeps up on you and the horror movie begins.
Funny, frantic and with a whole lot of funk to it, Red Blues is an intelligent pop song that will make it virtually impossible not to dance to when it comes on.
