Review: Filler – Pocket Change

Posted byDaniel FaganJuly 3, 2020New Music, ReviewsFiller

One of the prevailing recollections I have of being a student is the numerous drunken nights out. In fact, that’s pretty much the only memory I have. Whenever I try and recall any actual studying, it gets lost as I start to smell cider and beer. Too many evenings ended with me returning to my accommodation with far too much food from McDonald’s, emptying two pockets full of loose change onto the desk that should have been full of books. I guess what I’m trying to say, in a convoluted way, is that the feeling I got when listening to Pocket Change by Filler was that I had a brilliant time in my youth, but I never quite reached my full potential. To me, this song seems to speak of a relationship that mirrors this sentiment.

Starting with a pleasant, dreamlike intro before exploding into a powerful and formidable indie anthem, Pocket Change is a big single that’s sure to delight stuck at home festival-goers everywhere. The dynamism in this track is truly impressive, as it effortlessly switches between full band majesty and soft, sentimental splendour. Filler have only released one other song this year, but 2020 is going to be a massive year for them. The Cleveland quartet have a lot in their locker, and I can’t wait to see what they bring out next.

Few bands have such a polished, confident approach to their songwriting. Oddly enough, their friendship actually comes across within the music itself, adding an element of authenticity to their sound. If you’re looking for a song that makes you want to dance and contemplate at the same time, then Pocket Change is for you.
