If there was a soundtrack for falling into a dream filled only with melancholy and fuzz-toned entropy, then this track would most certainly be on it. Paris-based cold wave and jangle pop band Fiasco are the creators of such a song, with their new single, L’ennui, being an almost ethereal concoction of varying timbres and modulation to create a unique atmosphere unlike anything I’ve heard in a while.
To begin with, L’ennui is actually a cover of a rap track by fellow French artist Hyacinthe, who originally released the song back in November 2015. This version is pretty unrecognizable from the original and stands as a truly unique take on an upbeat track. Stylistically, it’s a fantastic listen, with so many different musical genres coming together to make a song that is interesting and distinct. The pacing is also perfect, as it is slowed from the original version with some solid drumming that leaves it feeling more open and surreal. The drums also significantly contribute to the distinct cold wave sound that Fiasco is known for. L’ennui really shines when it comes to the vocals, with soft-spoken and silvery singing that perfectly suits the track as a whole.
Fiasco have accomplished what many rock bands fail to do when covering a rap song, and it makes for one of the most memorable and unique tunes of the year so far. Check it out now! Cheers.
