Certain songs take their time to get to the good stuff, but they’re still absolute classics. Others waste no time in getting straight into the action, and this is undoubtedly the case with the beautiful Hell Is Only Hell by indie-folk artist Fairhazel.
With one of the best opening lines I’ve heard in a long time, the tune grabs you and takes you for a ride. Lyrically, it’s an impressive piece of work, combining straightforward statements with tongue-in-cheek humour and metaphor. I’m a sucker for entertaining lyrics, and a fan of artists such as Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, so it’s always a treat when I discover a musician that excels in this area.
You might be thinking “it’s all well and good having great lyrics, but if the music is bad, it doesn’t matter”, and you’d be right. Fortunately, Hell Is Only Hell is also hugely catchy, with melodies that stick to the brain like food to an unoiled frying pan. Few acts put out such well-rounded and self-assured work, and I have a feeling Fairhazel is only just getting started. So go ahead and check it out!
