Carriers is the project of Curt Kiser; a Cincinnati-based musical genius. Kiser is quite the grafter; playing in several bands and touring the US extensively from a young age – skipping college in the process but gaining a wealth of musical experience and a collective of friends along the way including Bryan Devendorf of The National and John Curley of The Afghan Whigs. All before adopting the moniker of Carriers in 2014 and bringing his sweeping rock visions to life.
Fast forward to 2019 and Carriers are set to release their debut album Now Is the Time for Loving Me, Yourself & Everyone Else. Are you excited?! YOU SHOULD BE.
Now don’t be fooled by the album title; it may sound like something Matty Healy might spurt out, but you aren’t about to get some whiney mainstream dance-rock. This debut is a powerful combination of self-reflection, layered with strong songwriting, hypnotic synths and lush guitar tones. The nine-track album evokes the same guitar-led grandeur of The War on Drugs as Kiser tells the tales of life, death, relationships and gratitude for another day.
My favourite track on the album is Another Guy. Initially, it sounds like the start of a Bon Iver song and smoothly flows into dreamy synths and spaced out guitar tones with mesmerizing percussion delivered by Devendorf, and nuanced, dynamic bass lines from Curley. This becomes a familiar tone throughout the album; whilst the words discuss the deeper parts of life, the music floats above in a dream-like haze.
“You showed me who I was, you said you’re more than just another guy,
You showed me that you were more than just another guy,
I know that you were telling me something right; clearly I was tripping on a past life”.
As Kiser details, “Overall it’s about appreciating what we have and remaining present, while still being able to have an honest perspective of the past and our future. I’ve personally found a lot of peace in just working hard and staying focused on what I’ve got going on, trusting, rather than being consumed with striving. This record process has taught me a lot about patience. Life will continue to teach me to have more. I’m just trying to accept what happens and handle it the best I can. Patience is forever”.
Now Is the Time for Loving Me, You & Everyone Else is out August 23rd digitally and on 2x vinyl via Good Eye Records. Pre-order it now.
