Congratulations! A word that instantly puts me on edge, as I’m not a man who accepts compliments or encouragement easily. I tend to think it’s more of a sarcastic remark, like “Oh, congratulations! You crashed the car again/ruined my birthday/shat the bed”. Take any one of those failures and apply where necessary. The immense tune from TV Coma, Congratulations is perhaps closer to a sarcastic one, complimenting the subject of the song one moment, then scorning their undeserving lover the next.
I’ll be transparent straight away and say that I love this tune. Congratulations (I wonder how many times I can plug this bad boy) is a tremendous epic. Opening with a relaxed guitar-led riff and complimented by vocals with a striking accent, it came as a bit of a surprise when TV Coma burst into the monumental chorus. It wouldn’t be out of place on a Biffy Clyro discography, striking me as one to put on the bucket list to see live. Surely a sing-along is in order when we can all gather together in venues again, bashing into sweaty bodies, screaming loudly while we do it. Oh dear, I’ve made it sound more akin to an orgy. I assure you that this is, perhaps sadly, not the case.
The lyrics tell a story of someone who’s in a relationship with a person that’s just simply not good enough for them, at least in the eyes of the singer. It’s bittersweet, a Congratulations on being so awesome, but you’re with a right loser. I’ve had, and still have, friends who are with undeserving tossers who shouldn’t legally be allowed to drive thanks to a lack of IQ points. But alas, all you can do is try to see why they would be with such a twerp. It’s a moral quandary, do you falsely pretend you like their partners or call them out for the fools they are? Thus far, I’ve found slagging them off behind their back to be satisfactory.
Anyhow, I’m proud to be showing it off to the world. It’s truly fantastic in every way.
Congratulations is out tomorrow! Listen to it now on Independent Music News!
