Sometimes, a piece of music reflects your mood perfectly. It’s an overcast day, and the weather has incited a state of reflection. My brain was in dire need of some soothing and engaging sounds to latch onto when I stumbled upon the new double single by Bristol dream-pop duo Sun Spot titled Johari Window and Lovesong.
A minimalistic, sparse, yet beautiful set of tracks, the band have managed to encapsulate a wonderful feeling within a subtle soundscape. Johari Window is ambient and lo-fi, and the song takes you on a journey, guided by Will Palmer’s autotuned vocals. There is a sense of longing present throughout, and it’s packed with melodic expertise that will stick in your head long after the final note rings out. This is undoubtedly a unique and special piece of work.
Next up, a cover of The Cure’s classic Lovesong. Palmer and George Turner show us why their collaboration works so well once again with this offering, providing a self-assured and original take on an old masterpiece. I couldn’t think of a better band to perform their version of this tune, and the duo have smashed it out the park. Go and check out Johari Window and Lovesong! You won’t regret it.
