Rent your tuxedos and long, sparkly dresses and book a limo, it’s premiere time! Don’t actually do those things. We are still socially distancing. Today’s spotlight shines brightly on MY-HI, an alt-rock band who are releasing a new single tomorrow called Digital Depression.
The title alone conjures up thoughts of the effects of the internet on mental health, and even though I’m unsure that’s the subject for Digital Depression, that was my immediate interpretation. To my credit, the lyrics and artwork do suggest our reliance upon all things technological to be an unhealthy relationship. It’s an accurate sentiment too. The glitz and glamour of our “social media selves” is not a true reflection of us as real, flawed human beings, and MY-HI have hit on a subject that is rife for endless discussion.
The gravelly guitar and raw vocals mesh together wonderfully and will whisk you away to a time gone by – the style of Digital Depression replicating a spirit of a ’90s stone-cold banger. It feels like MY-HI are staying utterly true to their vision, without compromise or change, and it’s refreshingly brilliant.
Digital Depression is out tomorrow! Give it a listen below.
