Somewhere in the north-west of England, beneath the darkness of a rainy town steeped in industrial woe, a band have formed. Their first release is a fantastic cover of a classic tune. What’s that I hear you say? It must be a cover of The Smiths! Or maybe Joy Division! No, not quite. It’s a unique and fantastic take on the glam rock masterpiece I Was Made For Loving You by Kiss.
When I first pressed play on this tune, I wasn’t quite sure how Everything Is Illuminated would sound. I’m pleased to say they have a style that is aesthetically and aurally beautiful. I often find that cover songs are pointless unless the artist brings something fresh and new to the piece, and that’s exactly what the band have done. Not many people would expect the original to have space for change, but Everything Is Illuminated have created the flip side of the coin with a version that reflects their own reality but doesn’t take away from the lyrics.
This is the band’s debut single, and a taste of what’s to come on their upcoming four-track EP. If I Was Made For Loving You is anything to go by, I can’t wait to hear what’s next.
