Sydney-based musical collective Casual Fan is one of those bands that can simultaneously raise your spirits and make you think about days gone by. Flight is the first single from their forthcoming debut album, I’ve Dreamt About These Days, and here at Independent Music News, we’re excited to be sharing this wonderful tune with our readers.
Flight is an anthem for the spirit of youth. The lyrics speak of missed flights, both literally and metaphorically, evoking memories of squandered opportunities and the many mistakes made in the arrogance of the young. At twenty-five, singer and guitarist Nathan Stephenson swears he won’t miss a flight again. These introspective words sit alongside a strong, tenacious beat and guitars that are somewhere in between Real Estate and Johnny Marr. Recorded in Cairns with Mark Myers (The Middle East/The Starry Field), there’s a driving force behind the music that injects life into the ears of the listener and lifts the soul.
The track is steeped in nostalgia, and yet it feels fresh, bringing to mind those rare moments in which you take a step back and breathe in the glory of a sunny day out with your best friends and a few cans of fruity cider. Dynamic and affecting, Flight is an excellent addition to the band’s previous two singles, Strangers and Berlin, which share that intangible quality of sincerity.
I’ve Dreamt About These Days is set to be released later this year, and will surely catapult the Sydney song-masters even further along in their journey, but for now, we’re glad we can enjoy this belter as we wait for Casual Fan to burst into the sky and take Flight.
